THE WIRE (issue 446)
Using a series of guitar loops as the foundation for their rythmic rituals, the Parisian duo of Vinz Dolorosa and Daniel Palomo Vinuesa liberally apply layers of saxophone, bass guitar, clarinet, electric wind instrument, percussion and abstracts sounds to their churning groove.
They are joined on their third full album by bass player Jean-Paul Pesty and vocalist Marie-Catherine Mossé, whose contributions add spectral nuances to the duo’s already haunted vibrations.
Not to be confused with French cult black metal group Soror Dolorosa, this Dolorosa are a darker, more progressive beast, with the occasional fleck of jazz glinting from its cold obsidian shell. The eight intriguing pieces that form Hordhen sound more intricately assembled than spontaneously performed – replete with Frippertronics styled guitar excursions that blur into floating musical cloud formations reminiscent of Popol Vuh of Third Ear Band at their most mystical.
